Cool Beans

Midtown coffee shop Urban Beans is all about quality, community, sustainability and inspiration
Two years ago, Virginia Senior wanted a coffee shop tenant in the building she co-owns on 7th Street. With the economy in rough shape, though, she didn’t get any takers. So, she and her business partner decided to do it themselves.
And Urban Beans, which opened its doors 15 months ago, was born.
"We put it together with not a lot of money but with a lot of heart,” Senior says. “The whole concept was founded on sustainability, community, quality, innovation and inspiration.”
The key to surviving in a down economy — the only economy Urban Beans has known — is a dedication to quality, Senior says.
“In this economic time, people aren’t willing to throw their money away,” she says. “You can’t skimp on quality — whatever industry you’re in.”
She also attributes the success of Urban Beans to great service, which comes from smart hiring decisions. Embracing the neighborhood has helped too.
"Midtown Phoenix is getting its own personality, and we’re part of that, and we enjoy that,” Senior says, noting that the shop has also benefited from the “independent wave.”
The artwork on the walls reflects local artists, and the big copper door you’ll see — it’s a cooler door from the 1950s that they salvaged from a bar in Northern Arizona.
“The finishes are a blend of modern and clean as well as warm and funky,” Senior explains. “We all live in a very chaotic world. We wanted a space that would allow you to breathe — where you’re not inundated with information. It’s cozy and comfortable.”
That philosophy also drives the menu, which over time has expanded beyond coffee and the shop’s trademark “Smash” drink to include fresh muffins and scones and lunch items, made with locally grown ingredients.
The shop is in the process of getting its liquor license with plans to sell wines and craft beers in the evenings.
“We’d like people to come in and be inspired,” Senior says, “and to relax.”
